Before entering into the profession of case management these questions must be evaluated properly: "What qualifications do you need for Case Management?" and "What are the other pre-requisites a Case Manager must possess?" A case manager is expected to possess a four years undergraduate degree, e.g., Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Social Work besides having two to four years of experience in clinic.
Earning certification from the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) or the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) adds advantage to his career. Before this certification is awarded, a case manager is required to undergo courses on case studies, patients' rights, outcomes management & healthcare delivery systems and ethical issues. Licensed Nurses or Social Workers are required to attend certification classes. A Case Manager can go up in the ladder of hierarchy as management administrator, disability management specialist or life care planner, by renewing the certifications from time to time.
Case Management positions mostly require a minimum of 5 years experience with good exposure to medication and surgery in a reputed hospital. The simple answer to the question "What qualifications do you need for Case Management?" is that there is no prescribed qualification to become a Case Manager. If you have a tendency to help others and possess some attributes, you have potential to become trained as a Long Term Recovery Case Manager. These attributes are a genuine liking for people, a respect for social and racial diversities, a deep care for people and their welfare, a respect for the beliefs of others, flexibility, an emphatic and effective listener, a good sense of humor, being supportive and non critical to others, an outgoing personality and good attitude, creativity and resourcefulness, observance and objectivity, respect for privacy of others, and the ability to respect and maintain confidentiality among others.
A case manager is required to obtain a license in the medical field before he can be considered a case manager. This license includes physical therapist, social worker, practical nurse or registered nurse. Maintenance of confidentiality and compliance of strict codes of ethics is the prime pre-requisites of a Case Manager. A certified case manager gets an estimated range of salary from $50,000 to $70,000 annually. A case manager is required to undergo training courses from time to time in order to keep him up to date.
Unlike skills, attitude cannot generally be taught. If you follow sharing with humanity, are willing to go ahead with someone when in need, can respect a person's individuality and help him be independent, and are willing to keep space for giving the benefit of the doubt to someone, then you can be potentially a volunteer case manager. Go ahead. If you have the required attributes then the question "What qualifications do you need for Case Management?" is not for you. Go ahead and opt for a professional career in case management.
