Case Management is an area of practice within various healthcare professions. Case Management also refers to the system of dispute resolution under which an almost complete administrative control of the litigation process is provided to the tribunal official or the court. Case Management involves planning, evaluation, assistance to fulfill the individual's health needs through interaction and accessible assets so that cost effective results are obtained.

Now the question “How to get into case management?” arises. Although the term case manager has become quite popular and widely recognized, but most of us are unaware that presently there are no qualification prescribed for clinical case managers. For example, to be eligible to become practitioner member of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers (BABICM) it requires a recognized qualification, fulfillment of requirements laid down by BABICM and holding appropriate insurance; but a brain injury case manager is eligible to become practitioner member of this Association without having all these qualifications. After acquiring appropriate experience, advanced membership of BABICM can be obtained.

A case manager is required to attend training sessions so that he could learn how to meet the client’s requirements. Case managers will obtain task from the casework supervisor and consult with him to determine the objectives and priorities in the case. Case management requires it’s professional to maintain proper details for each client and assist him to understand what has occurred and what help he has been given besides fulfilling various other tasks as per requirement of the profession. As against a rescuer, a case manager acts as a counselor and coordinator and makes the client feel responsible for recovery. 

In the profession of case management mostly the nurses or health workers are called case managers. In Ontario, there are different levels of Nurses. Nurses with adequate experience and additional academic training are called Nurse Practitioners (NP) or Registered Nurses - Extended Class (RN EC). Nurses with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) are called Registered Nurses (RN). Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) also termed Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) are those who have 2 years Diploma in Practical Nursing from a college of applied arts and technology.

To prepare for the question, “How to get into case management?” a case manager is required to undergo Certification Training. Through this training program, a case manager acquires greater experience and skills in developing relationship with clients and medical professionals, effective treatment plans, disease management, efficient communication ability and health care management. If you never had experience as a case manager, there are some courses that offer you to work as a case manager under supervision for certain period of time. In order to get certified, a written examination has also be cleared.

In case management, the Case Manager is required to work with the client to help him where needs assistance like medical care and in tackling psycho-social rehabilitations such acquiring new skills, counseling, establishing and strengthening relationship and finding jobs etc. If you feel that these skills fit with your temperament and personality trait, then “How to get into case management?” is not a problem for you. You must seek career option in this field, which is basically associated with assistance to humanity.
